When smooth is not smooth enough – Indexable inserts on the next level

Indexable inserts are removable cutting tools with mutliple replaceable cutting edges used to machine different materials on suitable tools such as metal, plastics, or wood. They can easily replace the worn-down cutting edges with an unused cutting edge by turning the insert - hence the name "indexable insert". In general, they can be differentiated according to their shape, their material composition, and their intended use.

Indexable inserts consist of the hardest materials in the world - carbide, cermet, polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (CBN), polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or cutting ceramics. Depending on their application, inserts have different shapes and sizes.

Sintered cutting edges that have already been treated by peripheral grinding usually remain with burrs, micro chipping, or rough surfaces. These in turn lead to unstable cuts, high tool wear and poorer workpiece quality.
Therefore, we recommend preparing the edges and surfaces for coating with the brush polishing machines from René Gerber AG. In addition to honing the edges, the surfaces are deburred by simultaneous polishing. Thus, the inserts are optimally prepared for coating as they gain maximum coating adhesion for hard materials such as titanium carbide (TiC) or titanium nitride (TiN). The wear and heat resistance of the inserts is guaranteed.



The coating process creates a  rough surface on the hard material layer. So-called "droplets" (material deposits) form on the coated surface. They hinder the chip flow and form a build-up edge.

However, the droplets can be removed again by polishing the surface after coating to enable optimum chip flow as perfectly demonstrated in the video of our customer ISCAR METALS.

Your customers benefit from a significantly increased performance of the tools. Not only are the edges honed, but the surface is also smoothed by being polished at the same time. This in turn increases productivity, improves quality, reduces tool wear, increases process reliability and at the same time reduces their production costs.
The cutting edges are provided with a radius that is around 10 - 200 µm. The shape of the edge honing (K-factor) plays a significant role here. Depending on the use of the tool, different edge radii are required on the tools. 

The K-factor generally provides information about the symmetry of the cutting edges and is formed from the ratio of the extensions of the straight rake and flank surfaces. It is vital for the tool life and surface quality of the inserts. In general, the best results are achieved with a K-factor of 1.0 to 1.5, which is mostly required for micro structuring of the cutting edges.
