Thanks to cutting-edge preparation, tool life can be doubled in stamping and fine-blanking processes.
It is known that targeted honing of cutting edges in machining tools leads to higher tool life and performance improvements. This finding also applies to the toolmaking of stamping and fine blanking tools and has already been adopted by technology leaders. The Gerber Brush-Polishing technology is recognized worldwide as a cost-effective, process-safe, and proven method for providing tools such as punching stamps, dies, inserts, profile cutting plates, drilling, milling, and other tools with defined cutting-edge preparations. With this technology, a specified radius in the range of 0.01 mm can be produced, and the cutting-edge surface, i.e., the roughness of the cutting edge, can be reduced by a factor of 3. The positive effects are a significant increase in tool life and a significant cutting data increase for the prepared tool. The improvements are in the micro-range and are hardly noticeable to the naked eye.

The difference between a ground and a brushed edge becomes apparent only through a microscope. The Gerber Brush-Polishing technology comprehensively processes the tool edge uniformly and rounds the cutting edge independently of the workpiece contour. At the same time, the delicate cutting edge is polished and further stabilized. Therefore, two effects are at work: rounding and polishing the cutting edge.

With the Gerber Brush-Polishing technology, radii from 5μ up to approximately 200μ can be repeatedly produced. It is also widely used to prepare tools for coating. Without such rounding, the coating would quickly peel off at the most crucial point, the cutting edge. The result is visible under the electron microscope in tests carried out by Feintool AG, a well-known manufacturer of fine-blanking tools. Gerber developed the powerful BP Smart Brushing machine specifically for toolmaking to make the results reproducible and available for tool manufacturers. The machine is used for honing cutting edges and uniform deburring of dies and other parts in toolmaking. Using diamond-coated brushes of different qualities or deburring brushes, the BP Smart delivers consistent and repeatable results and is very user-friendly.
